WELCOME TO THE WEBSITE OF THE FRIENDS OF ST JOHN’S TOTTINGTON

St John’s Church on Kirklees Street, Tottington is a Grade II listed building. It is the oldest surviving Free Church of England place of worship in the world.

Since 1867 the Church has been home to a congregation of the Free Church of England, within its Northern Diocese.

In recent years the building has suffered from dry rot and is currently being restored with generous financial assistance from English Heritage. Once the basic restoration work is complete, the building is to be developed to enable it to be used for a range of purposes to the benefit of the local community. The Chancel will be a dedicated worship area, but the nave will be equipped with kitchen, toilets and meeting rooms to enable it to host a wide range of functions.

To enable as many people as possible to contribute to and benefit from this exciting project, the Friends group has been formed. This is open to anyone who would like to support and be involved.

The Friends of St John’s Tottington was formally launched in September 2010, after several years of careful discussions and fact-finding activities. The founding partners are the congregation of St John’s and Tottington Amateur Dramatic Society (TADS) who will be using the building for their productions once the redevelopment is complete.
